If you have a broken tooth or a chipped tooth at the weekend, rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any pieces in milk, and call a dentist. The Tooth Spa in Chapel Allerton, Leeds is open on Saturdays and keeps appointments free for dental emergencies. On a Sunday, when we are closed, NHS 111 can direct you to urgent dental care. Most broken teeth can be repaired, and the sooner one is seen, the simpler the repair tends to be.

Fees are correct at the time of writing. The fees page always has the current figures. Our dental plan discount does not apply to implant treatment.

What are you paying for?

An implant is not one item. It is a course of treatment that usually runs over several months, and the fee covers each stage:

Assessment and planning. An examination, X-rays and usually a 3D CBCT scan, which shows how much bone you have and where the nerves and sinuses sit. We have a CBCT scanner in the practice, so you do not need to travel elsewhere for it.

The implant. A small titanium post placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. It takes the place of the root of the missing tooth.

Healing time. The bone needs to bond with the implant. This commonly takes a few months, and we check on it during that time.

The abutment and crown. The connector and the visible tooth, made to match the shade and shape of the teeth beside it.

Review appointments. To check the implant, your bite and how well you are able to clean around it.

What can make an implant cost more?

The “from” price is for a straightforward case. Your written treatment plan may be higher if:

You need more bone. After a tooth is lost the bone around it shrinks. If there is too little to hold an implant, a bone graft or a sinus lift may be needed.

A tooth has to come out first. We often place immediate implants, so you don’t need to wait for the site to heal.

Gum disease needs treating. Implants placed in a mouth with active gum disease are more likely to fail, so we treat the gums first.

You are replacing several teeth. Two implants can often support a bridge of three or four teeth, which costs less than one implant per tooth.

The tooth is at the front. Front teeth can need extra work on the gum and a more detailed crown to look natural.

You will have an itemised plan with the full cost before any treatment begins, and you are under no obligation to go ahead.

Implant, bridge or denture: how do the costs compare?

Option

Our fee

Worth knowing

Single implant

From £2,500

Fixed in place. The teeth either side are left untouched. Highest cost at the start.

Porcelain bridge

From £924 per unit

Fixed in place. A bridge to replace one tooth is usually three units, and the neighbouring teeth normally need to be prepared to hold it.

Partial denture

From £880

Removable. Lowest cost at the start. Some people find dentures take time to get used to.

The cheapest option on day one is not always the cheapest over ten or twenty years, because bridges and dentures tend to need replacing more often. Equally, an implant is not the right answer for everybody. We will talk you through all three, including the option of leaving the gap. You can read more on our pages about dental bridges and dentures.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes. We offer finance through our partner Tabeo, which lets you spread the cost of treatment over monthly payments. Finance is subject to status and to the lender’s terms. Our finance options page explains how to apply, and the team can give you a worked example for your own treatment plan.

Are dental implants worth the money?

For many people, yes. A well-placed implant that is kept clean can last for many years, it does not rely on the teeth next to it, and it helps to keep the bone in that part of the jaw. There is a high success rate, with good outcomes expected. As with any surgery there are some risks, which we’ll explain at your consultation.

Who places implants at The Tooth Spa?

Implant treatment at the practice is provided by dentists who have completed postgraduate training in implant dentistry and have placed hundreds of implants. You can read about their qualifications, and find their GDC registration numbers, on our Meet the Team page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a dental implant on the NHS?

Rarely. NHS implants are generally limited to people with a clear medical need, such as after mouth cancer or a serious injury to the face. Most implants in the UK are provided privately.

Does it hurt to have an implant placed?

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Most people describe a few days of soreness afterwards that settles with ordinary painkillers. If you are nervous, tell us at your consultation and we can talk through the ways we can make treatment easier for you.

How long does implant treatment take?

Typically 10 to 12 weeks to complete the treatment.

Why are implants cheaper abroad?

Prices overseas can be lower, and there are several factors for this. The materials used abroad are normally cheaper and not of the same standard used in the UK due to lower quality. Furthermore, implant treatment needs several visits and long-term follow-up. If something goes wrong once you are home, the cost of putting it right is usually yours. Before travelling, check who will look after the implant afterwards and how the clinician is regulated.

Is there a charge for the implant consultation?

Yes, there is a consultation fee, which is fully refundable and which we will confirm when you book. We only take the fee if you fail to attend your appointment. You can see our current prices on our fees page. If a CBCT scan is needed to plan your treatment, that is charged at the fee shown above.

Orthodontic treatments straighten teeth and improve the way they bite together. Orthodontics is a speciality of dentistry that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. While many associate orthodontic treatment with aesthetic improvements, its benefits extend far beyond just straightening teeth. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Orthodontic treatment can also correct bite issues, alleviate stress on the jaw, and improve overall oral function. This can lead to enhanced speech, reduced wear and tear on teeth, and relief from jaw pain or headaches.

At The Tooth Spa, we understand the impact orthodontic care can have on both your oral health and self-esteem, and we’re committed to providing solutions that address both functional and aesthetic needs.

In the world of Orthodontics, there is a wide range of orthodontic treatments tailored to meet the diverse needs of patients. Some of these include:

Traditional Metal Braces: The most common form of orthodontic treatment, these are effective for correcting a range of alignment and bite issues. They consist of metal brackets attached to each tooth, connected by a wire that guides teeth into position.

Ceramic Braces: For those seeking a less noticeable option, ceramic braces offer the same effectiveness as metal braces but with clear or tooth-coloured brackets. This makes them a popular choice for adults and older teenagers concerned about the visual impact of braces.

Clear Aligners: A virtually invisible solution to teeth straightening, clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays that fit snugly over your teeth. Perfect for patients looking for a discreet treatment option.

Lingual Braces: Attached to the back side of the teeth, lingual braces are completely hidden from view, making them the ultimate inconspicuous orthodontic solution. They are custom-made for each patient, ensuring a comfortable fit and effective treatment.

Choosing the right orthodontic treatment depends on various factors, including the complexity of your case, your lifestyle, and your aesthetic preferences. During your initial consultation, your local orthodontist will conduct a thorough assessment of your oral health and discuss your goals to recommend the best treatment option for you.

Embarking on your orthodontic journey is a step towards achieving the beautiful and healthy smile you deserve.

It begins with your initial consultation, where orthodontic specialists conduct a thorough evaluation of your dental health, including X-rays and digital scans, to understand your specific needs. This session is crucial for discussing your goals, concerns, and the various treatment options available.

Once a treatment plan is agreed upon, you move forward with the fitting of your chosen orthodontic appliance, whether it be traditional braces, ceramic braces, clear aligners, or lingual braces. Regular follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor progress, make adjustments, and ensure that your treatment is moving forward as planned. These appointments are an integral part of the process, allowing the orthodontist to fine-tune your treatment and address any concerns you may have along the way.

After your teeth have been successfully aligned, the final phase involves the use of retainers to maintain your new smile, preventing the teeth from gradually shifting back to their original positions.

Advanced Technology in Orthodontic Treatments

The orthodontic industry is continuously evolving, with advancements in technology playing a crucial role in enhancing patient care. Modern orthodontic practices use advanced technology to ensure treatments are more efficient, comfortable, and effective. Digital impressions, 3D imaging, and the latest in braces and clear aligner technology are among the state-of-the-art tools commonly used to improve the precision of diagnoses, the customisation of treatment plans, and the predictability of outcomes.

The adoption of digital scanning technology has significantly improved the patient experience by eliminating the need for traditional dental moulds. This method provides a more comfortable and accurate impression of the teeth, allowing for a clearer visualisation of the treatment plan. Patients can even preview their future smiles before beginning treatment, adding an exciting and motivating aspect to their orthodontic journey.

The golden hour—the first sixty minutes post-incident—becomes a race against time to save the tooth. Knowledge of simple interim measures, such as placing the tooth in a container with milk or saline solution, can make a significant difference in preserving the tooth’s viability until professional care is received.

The need for immediate action extends beyond the preservation of the tooth itself. It’s about mitigating pain, preventing infection, and avoiding long-term dental issues. Emergency dental services are equipped to handle such crises with the right blend of expertise, technology, and empathy, ensuring that patients receive the care they need when they need it most. Understanding the criticality of timing in dental emergencies empowers patients to act decisively, safeguarding their dental health and well-being.

Dealing with Toothache at Night

Many underestimate just how bad a toothache can be until they have to experience it for themselves, and dealing with it while trying to get to sleep is nearly impossible. If the pain is severe, our emergency dentist in Leeds can often see you the same day. Toothache at night isn’t ideal when you have responsibilities the next day, whether that be working or childcare or pre planned leisure activities, but there are ways to take the edge off to ensure you get some sleep.

At The Tooth Spa, we provide a range of dental services in Leeds, including emergency dental services, and we understand that tooth pain is as unpleasant as it is inconvenient. That’s why our team has created this guide to help you ease your toothache while trying to relax and sleep.

For independent advice, the NHS has a helpful guide to toothache.

If you’re experiencing a toothache, it’s best to get in touch with your dentist after two days if the pain does not go away, or if painkillers have little to no effect. It may be necessary to reach out to an emergency dentist if you cannot get a same day appointment – especially if you are experiencing a high temperature, have pain when you bite, a bad taste in the mouth, red gums, or your cheek or jaw is swollen.

Some of these symptoms could indicate an infection, which can get worse if left untreated and lead to avoidable complications. To find an emergency dentist, either call NHS 111 or find a reputable and reliable dentist near you. If you’re in Leeds, The Tooth Spa provides a range of dentist and emergency dental services, so get in touch with us today!

For tooth pain, there are many different options available regarding painkillers to help you ease the pain. Over the counter medications include paracetamol, ibuprofen, and co-codamol (codeine and paracetamol) that should be taken as recommended on the package. While it may seem tempting, unless you have a prescription we advise against taking stronger painkillers – especially if they have not been prescribed to you.

Another option includes numbing gel and spray, which works by numbing the area it is applied to in order to block pain. Most over the counter mouth numbing medications are designed for minor aches and pains, so will not work for tooth or gum abscesses, or pain from root canals, wisdom teeth, or dry socket.

If you’re dealing with tooth pain, try and adjust your sleeping position by elevating your head. Blood rushing towards your head can make your toothache much worse and by elevating your head, you are draining blood away from the site and taking pressure off the nerves around the toothache. Elevating your head also improves the circulation in your body to decrease swelling, which also contributes to pain relief.

To elevate your head, you can stack pillows behind your head and upper torso to make sure your head is above your body. Alternatively you can use an adjustable bed base but these are expensive and may not be required once the tooth pain is resolved. Or, you can use a foam wedge between your mattress and the base of your bed to create an incline to sleep on.

In case of a broken tooth, rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress on the affected area to reduce swelling. In the meantime, encourage your child to rinse their mouth with warm salt water to alleviate discomfort. One of the main problems with dental abscesses is that you might not find out about them until your child has already had them for a while, meaning they can already be in a problematic stage.

But when anxiety becomes excessive, it can interfere with your daily life and ability to function.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Are you experiencing severe mouth pain? What about bleeding? Perhaps you’ve experienced a recent injury to your face or mouth? There are a number of reasons why you may seek the services of an emergency dentist, just as there are many problems that are considered a dental emergency.

While some are more severe than others and require a visit to A&E rather than the services of an emergency dentist, there are many problems that can be solved by visiting a qualified dental office and being treated by a professional. For this article, we will be looking at more common emergency dental issues that can be treated by an emergency dentist.

Common dental emergencies can be prolonged tooth or mouth pain, broken or knocked out teeth, lost fillings, or infections. Issues related to chipping or exposed nerves can also be covered by an emergency dentist using emergency veneers and crowns. Here at The Tooth Spa, we’re committed to providing outstanding emergency dental services to our patients in Leeds and the surrounding area.

The most common reason most people end up visiting an emergency dentist is due to unexplained, prolonged pain in the teeth and gums, which can interfere with your everyday life. However, there are some other issues that can send you running into your dentist’s office and seeking an emergency appointment. While we will go into more detail on these ailments further below, some of the things that qualify a trip to the emergency dentist includes:

Severe Dental Pain: Whether you’re looking for a way to relieve the pain, or you require a filling or tooth extraction, this can be dealt with at your emergency appointment – especially if the cause is something that requires urgent care.

Uncontrolled Bleeding From the Mouth: If you are bleeding from the mouth, either through injury or tooth trouble, and you cannot stop it, it’s vital that you pay a visit to an emergency dentist to have it stopped by a qualified dentist.

Knocked-out Tooth: Injury or a strong impact can cause your tooth to come out, which could lead to damage that may not initially be evident. It’s important to make an emergency dental appointment to make sure no serious damage has been done.

Infection: An infection in the mouth can turn life threatening quickly, leading to abscesses that can cause tooth loss, or even something more serious like an infection in the blood. An emergency dentist can drain the abscess to prevent further issue.

There are many other things that could easily be considered a dental emergency, and our team at The Tooth Spa have come together to create this list of problems that can be treated by a professional emergency dentist. Below are some of the other common reasons you may visit an emergency dentist:

Intense Toothache

If you have a toothache, the first thing to do is determine whether you have an actual dental emergency. If a toothache is accompanied by swelling in or around the mouth or face, it can indicate that the infected tooth has caused an abscess, which will require immediate treatment from a dentist.

A toothache that comes on quickly and is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting, high fever or neck stiffness may be a sign of an infection in your jawbone, which could also require immediate treatment by a dentist. Toothaches can be caused by many things, such as decay and gum disease. However, toothaches are often the result of something simple such as a cavity or cracked tooth that needs to be fixed by your dentist. While the pain may be severe, it’s important not to panic and make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Swelling in one area of your body may mean that an abscess has formed there; an abscess is a pocket of pus that forms when tooth infection spreads under the skin’s surface. An abscess can cause pain and tenderness and needs attention from a professional emergency dentist. An infection in your mouth can cause you to taste metal. If you have an infection, it could be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. These infections can lead to other problems, such as cavities, gum disease and tooth decay.

If you need the services of an emergency dentist, you may be wondering the pros and cons of going to either an NHS or private practice. If a private emergency dentist is something that is a feasible expense for you or your family, we can’t recommend becoming a client at an emergency dental practice. However, while the NHS may be a good option for those who perhaps don’t have the money to pay for private dental treatment, it has many flaws that should certainly be considered.

The waiting list to be seen by an NHS dentist seems unending, especially when you look towards Northern England, where many dental practices simply do not have the means or space to take on new NHS patients, and so many are given little choice but to go private or wait years for dental treatment.

Meanwhile, private practices have an abundance of slots available for new patients, meaning you won’t have to wait a long time before getting an emergency appointment. While NHS practices are faster when it comes to giving emergency appointments, you may still sometimes have to wait days, or even weeks to be seen, which feels like a very long time when you’re in pain.

Additionally, NHS practices aim to see as many people as possible in a day, which drastically reduces the level of service patients receive. It’s never nice feeling like you’re being rushed, especially when you’re experiencing one of the many issues that would drive you to an emergency dentist. In fact, this need to see more patients in a day can lead to misdiagnosis or serious issues being overlooked until they develop into something worse later down the line.

While emergency dental treatment from a private practice can be pricey, like with everything else in life – you get what you pay for. If you want high quality, individualised service to get fast relief for dental problems, we couldn’t recommend an experienced, private dental practice more!

In recent years, we have seen the impact that misuse of services like Accident & Emergency can have on the NHS in general. With high waiting times to be seen, we highly recommend only going to A&E if you have an actual emergency – otherwise contacting your emergency dentist will usually suffice. Some of the dental issues that may require a trip to A&E includes:

Sudden, Severe Pain: If you’ve ever experienced tooth pain, you know it can be extremely difficult to focus on anything but the pain. Unfortunately, everyday tooth pain doesn’t qualify as a reason to go to a&e as this issue can typically be solved by an emergency dentist. However, if the pain is very intense or being caused by something else, such as broken teeth or a growing abscess, it’s important that you get seen by the hospital as soon as possible.

Heavy Bleeding: Depending on the severity of the bleeding and whether or not it can be stopped, a visit to a&e may be necessary to keep your overall health in check. It’s important that any continuous bleeding be stopped as soon as possible to avoid anaemia, hypovolemic shock, or even death. Hospital personnel can offer a range of treatment options to stop bleeding and to encourage blood to clot naturally. If more invasive intervention is required to make the bleeding stop, a hospital has access to a range of tools, equipment, and supplies to help you.

Facial, Mouth, or Tooth Injuries: Injuries are a common occurrence in a&e and the medical staff who work there have seen everything there is to see. There are many ways you can cause significant damage to your teeth, mouth, and face that require urgent medical attention to resolve. Whether this is through a sporting injury or an accident at work, it’s essential that any serious injury to the face is quickly assessed by trained medical professionals in a&e.

When to Call a Private Dentist

When you need to call a private dentist, it’s often in an emergency or the convenience of going private can be a contributing factor. A toothache or other dental pain can be excruciating and make it difficult to function normally.

The good news is that many of these problems can be solved by a simple dental cleaning and check-up, which is why it’s important to see your dentist regularly. However, if you suspect that you are suffering from something more serious than a simple toothache, then it’s time to call an emergency private dentist. Here are some signs that you should call a private dentist immediately:

For independent advice, the NHS has a helpful guide to dental abscesses.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth and ensure that your smile looks beautiful for years to come. Some public dentists don’t always have access to this technology because it’s expensive and requires specialist training. However, private dentists like ourselves invest in our equipment and use state-of-the-art techniques when performing this procedure on our patients. This makes us ideal for anyone who wants permanent new teeth but doesn’t want to deal with dental implants themselves.
