Professional teeth whitening safely lightens the natural colour of your teeth by several shades. At The Tooth Spa in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, our dentists plan your whitening around your teeth and the result you want, so your smile looks brighter but still natural.

Teeth naturally darken with age and pick up stains from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. Whitening works on both, giving you a fresher, more confident smile.

Our whitening treatment

Home whitening
We make custom-fitted trays from impressions of your teeth. You wear them with a professional whitening gel for a set time each day over a few weeks, gradually lightening your teeth. Most people wear them for an hour or two, or overnight, depending on the gel.

Is whitening right for me?

Whitening works best on yellow or brown discolouration. Some deeper stains, such as grey staining from medication or a tooth that has darkened after an injury, may respond more slowly. Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. Your dentist will check your teeth and gums first and treat any decay or gum problems before you start.

If your teeth are chipped, worn or uneven as well as discoloured, composite bonding or veneers may give a better result.

Your questions

Teeth whitening FAQs

Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, when it is carried out or supervised by a dentist. In the UK, only dental professionals can legally provide tooth whitening with professional-strength gels. We check your teeth and gums first to make sure whitening is right for you.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Some people notice mild sensitivity during treatment. It is temporary and usually settles within a few days of finishing. We can recommend a desensitising toothpaste or gel to help.
How long do the results last?
Results typically last a couple of years. They last longer if you cut down on tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, and occasional top-ups with your home trays help keep your teeth bright.
Will whitening change my crowns or fillings?
No. Whitening only works on natural teeth, so existing crowns, veneers and fillings stay the same colour. If they are on show, we will talk you through your options before you start.
Are shop-bought or online whitening kits as good?
Products sold over the counter contain much weaker gels, and badly fitting trays can let gel irritate your gums. Professional whitening uses trays made for your teeth and is supervised by a dentist, so results are more even, more predictable and safer.
Can I whiten crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening gel only lightens natural teeth, so crowns, veneers and white fillings stay the same shade. We will check for these at your consultation at our Leeds practice and talk you through your options.
