When might a tooth need removing?

  • A tooth is badly decayed or broken and can’t be repaired
  • Infection or an abscess that hasn’t settled with other treatment
  • Advanced gum disease has left a tooth loose
  • A wisdom tooth is impacted, keeps getting infected or is damaging the tooth in front
  • To make space before orthodontic treatment

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25. If there isn’t enough room they can come through at an angle or get stuck under the gum, trapping food and causing pain, swelling and infection (pericoronitis). Not every painful wisdom tooth needs to come out. Often the area can be cleaned and the infection treated so it settles. If problems keep coming back, we may recommend removal.

What happens during an extraction?

  1. Assessment: your dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see its roots and position.
  2. Numbing: the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but not pain. IV sedation is available for nervous patients.
  3. Removal: a simple extraction often takes just a few minutes. A surgical extraction, for example of an impacted wisdom tooth, takes a little longer.
  4. Aftercare: we give you clear instructions and check you are comfortable before you leave.

If a tooth is very deeply impacted, we may refer you to a specialist.

Recovery after an extraction

  • Some swelling and discomfort for a few days is normal; paracetamol or ibuprofen help.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, hot drinks and vigorous rinsing for the first day.
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
  • Stick to soft foods and chew on the other side.

Call us if pain gets worse after a few days, as this can be a sign of a dry socket, which we can treat.

Replacing a missing tooth

Once the area has healed, we can talk you through replacing the tooth with implants, a bridge or dentures.

Extraction FAQs

Does having a tooth out hurt?
The area is fully numbed, so you should feel pressure but no pain. Any soreness afterwards usually settles within a few days.

Can I go to work afterwards?
Many people take the rest of the day off and go back the next day. If you have IV sedation, you will need someone to take you home.

Do all wisdom teeth need removing?
No. Healthy wisdom teeth that have come through properly can be left alone and checked at your routine visits.
