The process

What happens during treatment?

    The hard outer layer of the tooth.

    Dentine
    The layer underneath, which makes up most of the tooth.

    The pulp
    The nerve at the centre of the tooth. When it is infected or inflamed, it is removed.

    The root canals
    Cleaned, shaped, then filled and sealed.

    Your dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the root canals and how far the infection has spread.

    A local anaesthetic numbs the tooth.
  3. 3
    A small opening is made in the top of the tooth, the infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped.

    A temporary filling is placed and, if needed, medicine is left inside the tooth to clear any remaining infection.
  5. 5
    At the next visit the canals are filled and sealed. Back teeth often need a crown afterwards to protect them from breaking.
Aftercare

Aftercare

The tooth may feel tender for a few days. Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help; always follow the instructions on the packet. Avoid biting hard food on the tooth until it has been permanently restored, and keep brushing and cleaning between your teeth as normal. Call us if the pain or swelling gets worse after a few days, or if your temporary filling falls out.

How many visits will I need?
Usually two or three, depending on the tooth and how much infection there is.
Can I go back to work afterwards?
Most people return to work or normal activities the same day once the numbness wears off.
What happens if I don’t have treatment?
An infected tooth will not heal on its own. The infection can spread and cause an abscess, and the tooth may need to be removed.
