Dental implants are the closest thing to having your own teeth back. A small titanium post replaces the root of a missing tooth and supports a natural-looking crown, bridge or denture that is fixed firmly in place. At The Tooth Spa in Chapel Allerton we place implants for single teeth, several teeth and full arches.

The basics

How an implant works

  1. The crownThe visible tooth, made to match the colour and shape of your own teeth.
  2. The abutmentA small connector that sits on top of the post.
  3. The postA titanium screw placed in the jawbone, where it bonds with the bone over a few months.
Your options

Which type of implant treatment do I need?

Single toothOne implant and crown replaces one missing tooth, without touching the teeth either side.
Several teethTwo implants can support a bridge of three or more teeth, so you don’t need one post per tooth.
Secure denturesA few posts hold a denture firmly in place, so it doesn’t slip when you eat or speak.
A full archA complete set of fixed teeth on a small number of posts, often fitted the same day with Teeth in a Day.

At your consultation we will explain which option suits your mouth, your bone and your budget.

Benefits

Why choose implants?

01They look, feel and function like natural teeth, so you can eat what you like.
02They don’t rely on the neighbouring teeth, unlike a bridge.
03They help preserve the jawbone, which shrinks after teeth are lost.
04With good care they can last for many years, often decades.
05They can hold dentures securely so they don’t slip.

The process

Your treatment, step by step

  1. 1
    Consultation
We examine your mouth, discuss your options and take X-rays or a 3D CBCT scan to check the bone.
  2. 2
    Placement
The post is placed under local anaesthetic. IV sedation is available if you are nervous.
  3. 3
    Healing
The post bonds with the bone, usually over a few months. A temporary tooth can often be fitted in the meantime.
  4. 4
    Your new tooth
The final crown, bridge or denture is fitted and checked for fit and bite.

Teeth in a Day

If you have lost most or all of your teeth, or your remaining teeth are failing, Teeth in a Day may be an option. A full arch of fixed teeth is attached to implants on the same day they are placed, so you leave with a complete smile. Find out more about Teeth in a Day.

After your treatment

Aftercare

For the rest of the day after surgery, avoid smoking, driving and exercise. Stick to soft foods at first, keep the area clean and use a chlorhexidine mouthwash daily for the first week. We give you an aftercare pack with everything you need. After that, brush and clean between your teeth as normal and keep up regular check-ups and hygienist visits.

Your questions

Implant FAQs

Do implants hurt?
The area is numbed during surgery, so you shouldn’t feel pain. Mild soreness afterwards is usually managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
Am I suitable?
Most healthy adults are. Smoking, gum disease and some medical conditions can affect healing, and we will check this at your consultation.
What if I don’t have enough bone?
Your scan shows how much bone you have. If there isn’t enough, there may be options to build it up, which we will explain.
How long do implants last?
With good daily cleaning and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years, often decades. The crown on top may need replacing at some point through normal wear.
I wear a denture. Can implants help?
Yes. A few implants can hold a denture firmly in place so it doesn’t slip, or replace it altogether with fixed teeth. Ask us about Teeth in a Day.
