What happens at your appointment
Your dentist will examine the problem, take an X-ray if needed and explain your options and costs before any treatment. Our aim is to relieve your pain on the day, whether that means a temporary filling, draining an infection, starting root canal treatment or, if needed, removing the tooth.
If you can’t come in straight away, we can talk through your symptoms on the phone and advise how to manage the pain in the meantime. We also see children’s dental emergencies.
Emergency dentist prices
An emergency consultation costs £71.50. Any further treatment is explained and priced before we start, and you can see all our prices on our fees page.
Common problems we treat
Toothache: usually caused by decay, a cracked tooth or an infection in the nerve. We find the cause and relieve the pain, which may mean a filling, dressing the tooth or starting root canal treatment.
Abscesses and swelling: a painful, swollen gum or face often means infection. We drain and clean the area where needed and prescribe antibiotics if they are appropriate.
Broken or chipped teeth: small chips can be smoothed or bonded the same day. Larger breaks may be protected with a temporary repair and later restored with a crown.
Lost fillings and crowns: keep a lost crown safe and bring it with you, as it can often be re-cemented. A lost filling can be replaced to protect the tooth.
Wisdom tooth pain: gum infections around a partly erupted wisdom tooth are common. We clean and treat the area, and discuss removal if problems keep coming back.
Knocked-out teeth: time matters. Keep the tooth in milk or gently back in its socket and call us straight away.
Getting here from Roundhay
The practice is at 47 Potternewton Lane, Chapel Allerton, LS7 3LW, a short drive or bus ride from Roundhay Park and Oakwood. There is free parking at the practice, and everything is on the ground floor.
After your emergency appointment
Once the pain is under control, your dentist will explain whether any further treatment is needed and what it will cost, so there are no surprises. Many problems can be fixed in one visit, while others need a follow-up appointment to finish the treatment properly.
After treatment, some tenderness for a day or two is normal. Take painkillers as advised, eat soft food on the other side and keep the area clean. If you were given antibiotics, finish the full course. Call us if the pain gets worse rather than better, or if swelling returns.
Preventing the next emergency
Many dental emergencies start as small problems that grow unnoticed. Regular check-ups and hygienist visits catch decay, cracks and gum problems early, when they are quicker and cheaper to treat. If you play contact sport, a custom mouthguard is the best way to protect your teeth from knocks. Wearing a night guard can also help if you grind your teeth, which often causes cracks and sensitivity over time.
Opening hours
Monday 9am to 5pm, Tuesday 9am to 7pm, Wednesday to Friday 9am to 9pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. We also cover bank holiday weekends for emergencies.
Ongoing care for Roundhay patients
Once you are out of pain, we offer a full range of private dental care, including crowns and bridges, fillings, dentures and veneers. Free parking is available at the practice.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be registered with you?
No. You don’t need to be a registered patient to book an urgent appointment. Just call and tell us what is wrong, and we will find the earliest time we can see you.
What should I do about toothache until I can be seen?
Take regular over-the-counter painkillers as directed, rinse with warm salt water and avoid very hot, cold or sugary food and drinks. Don’t put aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn.
What if I knock a tooth out?
Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it is clean, gently push it back into the socket, or keep it in milk, and call us straight away. The sooner it is seen, the better the chance of saving it.
Can a broken tooth be repaired the same day?
Often, yes. Small chips can usually be smoothed or bonded in one visit. Larger breaks may need a temporary repair first, followed by a crown once the tooth has settled.
I’m nervous about the dentist. Can you help?
Absolutely. Let us know when you book and we will take things at your pace. IV sedation is also available for nervous patients who need more extensive treatment.
Is there parking?
Yes, there is free parking at the practice, and we are easy to reach from Roundhay by car or bus.
