Care Home Dentistry in Leeds
Dental health matters
At The Tooth Spa, Leeds, we know how much dental health matters for older people, and how closely poor oral health is linked to poor general health.
Residents may struggle to brush properly or forget whether they have. Carers are not always trained to help, and natural teeth can be missed when only a partial denture is cleaned.
Dentures worn for years often stop fitting as gums shrink. Loose dentures make eating hard and can lead to weight loss or a pureed diet. Without regular check-ups, problems such as oral cancer can also go unnoticed.
How we can help your home
Taking residents to a practice means arranging staff and transport, or relying on relatives. We come to you instead.
We visit to carry out oral health screening, provide treatment on site and offer oral healthcare training for your staff, helping your home meet CQC outcomes without the transport, mobility or staffing worries.
What a visit involves
-
1Examination and planOur dentist examines each resident’s teeth, gums, mouth and any dentures, and checks for signs of oral cancer. We then agree a clear treatment plan with the resident, their family and your staff.
-
2Treatment in their roomMany treatments can be carried out in the resident’s own room, including check-ups, denture adjustments and repairs, and taking impressions for new dentures. If more complex treatment is needed, we will explain the options and help arrange it.
-
3Advice for carersWe also leave simple, practical advice so carers know exactly how to clean each resident’s teeth and dentures day to day, and what signs to look out for between visits.
Training for your staff
Our free oral healthcare sessions show care staff how to brush residents’ teeth safely, look after dentures and spot early warning signs such as sore spots, loose teeth or swelling. Sessions are short, practical and can be arranged around your shift patterns, so as many of the team as possible can attend.
For independent advice, the NHS has a helpful guide to looking after your teeth and gums.
