Domiciliary dental care means dental treatment provided in your own home. At The Tooth Spa in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, our dentists visit patients who find it very difficult or impossible to get to the practice because of illness, disability or limited mobility.

Treatment is usually easiest in the surgery, where all our equipment is to hand, so we will always see you there if we can. When that isn’t possible, we bring the dentist to you.

Who can benefit from a home visit?

  • People who are housebound or have severe mobility problems
  • People with a long-term illness or disability that makes travelling difficult
  • People living with dementia who would find a visit to the practice distressing

Care homes can also arrange regular visits for residents. See our care home dentistry page for details.

What treatment can be provided at home?

Using portable equipment, we can carry out check-ups, scaling, simple fillings, simple extractions, and the making and adjusting of dentures.

At home, with portable equipment
  • Check-ups
  • Scaling
  • Simple fillings
  • Simple extractions
  • Making and adjusting dentures
At the surgery
  • X-rays
  • Surgical extractions
  • Crowns and bridges

Some treatments need equipment that can’t be moved, such as X-rays, surgical extractions, crowns and bridges. These may need a visit to the surgery. Sometimes a simpler treatment plan is the best option, or more complex work can be done at the practice and the rest at home.

Preparing for a home visit

01Before the visit we will ask about the patient’s medical history, any medicines they take and any problems with their teeth, gums or dentures.
02It helps if a relative or carer can be there too, especially if the patient has memory problems or finds communication difficult.
03If possible, have a chair ready in a well-lit spot near a window, and keep any dentures to hand.
04A list of current medicines and any recent hospital letters is also very helpful.
05We will agree a date and time with you and anyone involved in the patient’s care.

Looking after teeth and dentures at home

Brush any natural teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste; carers can help if brushing has become difficult. Clean dentures every day, take them out at night and look out for sore spots. Any mouth ulcer or patch that hasn’t healed within three weeks should be checked by a dentist.

For more advice, see the NHS guide to looking after your teeth and gums.

When to contact us

Please get in touch if someone you care for has toothache, a broken tooth or denture, dentures that have become loose or painful, bleeding or swollen gums, or difficulty eating. Changes in behaviour, such as refusing food or pulling at the face, can be a sign of dental pain in people who find it hard to explain how they feel.

We will talk through the problem and arrange the most suitable care, whether that’s a home visit or an appointment at the practice. Our emergency dentist team can also help with urgent problems.
