A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay, wear or a small chip, stopping the problem from getting worse and restoring the tooth’s shape. At The Tooth Spa in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, we only use tooth-coloured fillings, so your repair blends in with your natural teeth.

The sooner decay is treated, the smaller the filling needs to be, so it’s worth booking in if a tooth has become sensitive or you can feel a rough edge.

  2. 2

The decayed or damaged part is removed and the cavity is cleaned first.
  3. 3
    The root
Left untouched. The area is numbed, so you should not feel pain.
  1. 1
    Examine and numb
First, your dentist examines the tooth and may take an X-ray to see how far any decay has spread. The area is then numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during treatment.
  2. 2
    Repair and polish
The decayed or damaged part of the tooth is removed and the cavity is cleaned. Tooth-coloured composite is placed in layers, shaped to fit your bite and hardened with a special light. Finally, the filling is polished so it feels smooth. Most fillings are completed in a single appointment.
Benefits

Why choose tooth-coloured fillings?

01They are matched to the shade of your teeth, so they are hard to spot.
02They bond directly to the tooth, which often means less healthy tooth needs to be removed.
03The same material can be used to repair chipped or worn teeth.
Aftercare

Looking after your fillings

Your lip and tongue may feel numb for a few hours, so take care not to bite them and avoid hot drinks until the feeling returns. Mild sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days is common and usually settles on its own. If your bite feels high or the sensitivity doesn’t improve, contact us so we can check the filling.

To help your fillings last, brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, cut down on sugary food and drinks, and keep up with regular check-ups.

Your questions

Filling FAQs

For independent advice, the Oral Health Foundation has a helpful guide to white fillings.

Do fillings hurt?
The tooth is numbed first, so most people feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Let your dentist know if you feel any discomfort and they can give more anaesthetic.
How long do fillings last?
Many fillings last for years. It depends on the size of the filling, where it is, whether you grind your teeth and how well you look after it.
When can I eat afterwards?
Composite fillings are set hard before you leave, but wait until the numbness has worn off so you don’t bite your cheek or tongue.
Can you replace my old silver fillings?
Yes. If an amalgam filling is worn or broken, it can be replaced with a tooth-coloured filling. Your dentist will advise whether this is right for you.
