Signs Your Old Toothbrush Needs Replacing

Before looking any further, we need to start by considering some of the key signs that your old toothbrush might need replacing. There are several things you could look out for this in regard, but some of the most common include the following points:

Are the bristles starting to fall out of your toothbrush? Generally speaking, if the bristles are falling out of your old toothbrush, that’s a good sign that the toothbrush is either low-quality or otherwise old and needs replacing.

Are the bristles splayed out on your toothbrush? On a brand new toothbrush, the bristles should always point directly forwards. However, the bristles can quickly begin to splay with time and regular use due to pressure. This point may make them less effective at cleaning your teeth, leaving plaque around your gum line in particular.

Is the toothbrush feeling flimsy in your hands? Poor quality toothbrushes may begin to weaken with continual use, and in some cases, the handle may even snap if the toothbrush is dropped or crushed. You should always replace these since an uneven handle will result in less control when brushing.

These are just a few of the different signs that you should look for when considering whether or not the time is right to replace your toothbrush. Ideally, most people aim to change their toothbrushes after a few months since this is usually when the bristles begin to fray. Some modern toothbrushes may even have replaceable heads, allowing you to continue using the toothbrush’s body to reduce your wastage and cut the cost of buying a full new toothbrush.

Manual vs Electric Toothbrushes: Which is Better?

Deciding between manual and electric toothbrushes can offer several key challenges, as there is naturally a lot to think about in this regard. Indeed, while it’s easy to assume that electric toothbrushes are the clear winner, this may not always be the case; as a result, you may want to consider the following points to determine whether an electric or manual toothbrush would be best suited to your needs.

The Case for Manual Toothbrushes

Manual toothbrushes are a cheap and cheerful option, and they’ve been the mainstay of toothbrushing for decades. Plus, with prices for manual toothbrushes starting from just a few pounds apiece, they’re a much lesser price than electric models. This fact also makes it much less painful to replace them, ensuring your toothbrush is regularly replaced.

In addition, control may also be a lot easier with manual toothbrushes, especially for younger users; the vibrations of electric brushes can sometimes be surprisingly intense. These vibrations can make it a little tricky to reach those harder areas. Plus, it’s also worth considering that most manual toothbrushes have a finer handle than electric brushes, which need to allow room for batteries; as such, moving manual brushes around your mouth can be a lot easier.

The Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes

When first announced, electric brushes were big news, and they still maintain their position as the leading option for a clean and fresh mouth. Indeed, since electric toothbrushes typically have a smaller head and can vibrate or rotate, they’re drastically more effective at dislodging plaque from the surface of your teeth for a cleaner smile overall.

In turn, this may make them effective for preventing tooth decay and the early symptoms of gum disease – making it much less likely you’ll need to visit emergency dentists in Leeds overall. However, just because you’ve got an electric toothbrush doesn’t mean you should put off visiting your dentist; complications can still arise, especially if you have a chipped tooth or in regions that are harder to clean.

Which is Better – An Electric or Manual Toothbrush?

There’s no clear-cut answer to which is better: electric or manual toothbrushes? Indeed, irrelevant of the type of toothbrush you own, the level of cleaning your teeth receive will inevitably depend on how well you use it.

With this in mind, you should only opt for an electric toothbrush if you’re confident you’ll be able to use it successfully. For example, if you have receding gums or if you’re buying a brush for a toddler, who may be less confident with their brushing technique, a gentler and more easily controlled manual brush may be more suited.

It’s also worth considering that, if your budget is also limited, choosing a manual toothbrush that you can replace often may be better than buying an electric brush and hoping it’ll last for years. However, if you can afford the expense of an electric toothbrush and you’re confident that you can use it effectively, an electric brush is the way to go for a deeper clean and a much healthier smile overall.

Oral hygiene is important for your health and appearance, and at our dental practice in Leeds we see the difference it makes every day. It’s also a big part of how you present yourself to the world. If you want to be confident, healthy, and attractive, then it’s time to brush up on some oral care basics!

This blog post will cover what proper oral hygiene should include as well as the benefits of good dental care. We’ll also talk about a few ways that can help keep your teeth clean and strong. Let’s dive in!

The History of Oral Hygiene

The basic concept of oral hygiene has been part of human life for a long time with the first rudimentary toothbrush dating back over 5 thousand years ago. These first toothbrushes took the form of a stick that would be chewed until it frayed and this would be used to brush the teeth. Oral hygiene then remained the same for over 4 thousand years until the 13th century, when the Chinese first started to use natural bristles placed in a bone handle.

For independent advice, the NHS has a helpful guide to keeping your teeth clean.

Whether a medieval bone toothbrush or a modern electric toothbrush the goal remains the same to gently remove the plaque and food residue from your teeth. Around the 1500s, mouthwash began to take a familiar form, as a solution combining mint and vinegar was gargled to fight bad breath and harmful bacteria. However, it wasn’t until as late as the 19th century that the use of urine completely subsided, and this was due to a better-suited ingredient: alcohol. With this substitution, the type of mouthwash that we still use today truly came to market.

In comparison to other oral hygiene, dental floss is relatively new. It was American dentists who first advocated for the use of waxen silk to be used to remove debris from between teeth back in 1819. Modern Tooth floss as we know it today was developed over time in 1800.

Benefits of Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is an important part of normal life. The benefits of a day oral hygiene route are numerous. The daily use of fluoride toothpaste is imperative to prevent plaque build-up, while using mouthwash daily can stop the bacteria which cause bad breath or halitosis. Daily oral care is an important step to prevent more serious issues and to catch things early if you do have a problem.

Types of Oral Care

Oral hygiene should be done twice a day normally in the morning and evening. It is important not to brush your teeth immediately after a meal to prevent enamel erosion. People’s oral hygiene can differ from person to person and it is important to discuss with your dentist to ensure best practices for your teeth. Day-to-day oral hygiene generally has three main forms, which are outlined below.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is an important first step to your oral hygiene and is used to remove loose debris prior to more aggressive cleaning. It is important not to use your mouth last as this can wash your teeth of the beneficial fluoride found in your toothpaste. Many people claim they don’t like mouthwash, however, it is vital to try several different types of mouthwash to find the one that works best for you.

Flossing

Flossing is advised to be the next step in any good oral hygiene routine. Using tooth floss daily is cruel to prevent plaque build-up in the small gaps between your teeth. Flossing is also a useful part of oral hygiene throughout the day to help dislodge food such as apples or corn from your teeth after a meal.

Brushing Teeth

The most obvious part of a good ora routine is brushing your teeth. Whether you use an electric toothbrush or a manual one, this is the most important part of your daily routine. The general rule is to spend 30 seconds brushing each quarter of your mouth. Many people choose to listen to a 2 or 3-minute song while brushing to ensure they brush their teeth for the right amount of time.

You should consider the type of toothbrush you use; electric and non-electric are normally the first choices people make when getting a new toothbrush. However, just as much thought should be taken when it comes to the brush head. Many brands now offer not only soft or firm but also flossing and whitening brushes. It is worth trying a hand full to ensure you have the best option for you.

Professional Treatments

Even with daily cleaning sometimes you will need professional treatment to keep your teeth looking their best. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms you may still benefit from a professional clean by your dentist. Due to the increased popularity of teeth whitening services, you may be tempted to try an at-home treatment, however for the most consistent result and to avoid sensitive teeth in the long run it is always worth asking the advice of your dentist.

The Tooth Spa has been providing quality dental care to their patients for many years now and we are proud of our long-standing family tradition of excellence, honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness that is evident when you walk through our doors. Our team offers everything from routine teeth cleanings to advanced cosmetic dentistry services like porcelain veneers or tooth implants; there’s nothing they can’t do!

Did you Know Smiling Every Day is Good for You?

It’s been said that “laughter is the best medicine” so it follows that a smile can do wonders for your health as well. Research has shown that smiling benefits not just your emotional and physical wellbeing, but also improves the mood of those around you.

Look after your smile

Smiling every day is easier when you feel confident about your teeth. Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth and cutting down on sugary food and drinks all help to keep your smile healthy. Regular check-ups and hygiene appointments remove the build-up that brushing can miss and help catch problems early. If you would like a brighter smile, our team can also talk you through options such as teeth whitening or composite bonding.

For independent advice, the NHS has a helpful guide to looking after your teeth and gums.

This blog post will explore why smiling every day is good for you!

Smiling Makes You More Attractive

You’ll have a difficult time convincing anyone that you don’t know how to smile. A big grin is a perfect way to ensure others feel comfortable around you. Sure, your type might be more smoky-eyed and moody – but it’s hard not to notice when someone flashes their pearly whites! Facial expressions play an important role in interactions between people: so make sure yours are always welcoming by smiling often!

Relieves Stress

Whether you’re feeling happy or sad, the easiest way to lift your mood is with a smile. There are some reasons why this might seem like common sense; it’s much easier for us to put on a smile when we have something fun happening than if we feel bad! But did you know that smiling itself can act as an instant stress reliever? Our body gets so used to sending “joy = smile” signals that even just putting on a fake one will trick our bodies into releasing serotonin and dopamine which help elevate our moods.

It’s Contagious

There’s a reason why the expression “a smile that lights up the room” exist. It’s because, much like yawning, smiling is contagious! That’s why we say we’ve “caught” the giggles or can’t help but smile when seeing someone laugh really hard at something funny. Being this guy who walks into a crowded room and has everyone feeling good about themselves? There’s nothing better than being able to do that for people you care about around you!

Panoramic collage of multiracial toothy people smiles, oral care and stomatology concept

Keeps Your Positive

There’s a reason why the expression “a smile that lights up the room” exist. You know, much like yawning, smiling is contagious! That’s probably because it boosts serotonin levels in your brain and makes you feel better not only physically but emotionally as well. So next time someone tells a joke or something funny happens to make them laugh – don’t be afraid of catching their giggles too!

So with That – There are No Excuses to Not Smile!

We understand that losing confidence in your smile because of problems with your teeth is a hard spot to be in.
